The vibrant NOVA scene in the ’90s brought so many people together. Before cell phones, before Ubers, before the internet, we devoured local music and were damn proud of “our bands”. NOVA rocked, and will do so again at Wolf Trap’s famed Filene Center when PMB takes the stage with emmet and VACO to blow the roof off the joint like we all did back in the day. All three bands will play full sets as well as some killer collaborations planned for an epic encore. I can already see the smiles on our faces and for sure out in the packed house.

When I was in high school, I started dreaming of being in a band, a real band, one that played the bars, clubs and many rock venues of the NOVA/DC scene. I would stare at the pages of the local rag, The Northern Virginia Rhythm. I’d scan the entertainment listings in the Weekend section of the Washington Post with wide eyed enthusiasm. I would see flyers at Veneman Music Store, Kemp Mill Records and The Record Exchange for upcoming gigs that I so wanted to be a part of.
emmet swimming — Later in my college years, before I had penned a single song, one band was rising to the top with an unstoppable underground fanbase — emmet swimming. My childhood friend, Barrett Payne, introduced me to their first recordings. It spoke to me the way REM’s “Murmur" and Radiohead’s "Pablo Honey" did but I also felt the energy of The Clash and early U2. When their album "Arlington to Boston" was released, they were recognized nationally for what NOVA already knew: emmet swimming crushes and NOBODY sounded like them. I cannot wait to share the night with these legends.
Virginia Coaltion — Known as “VACO” to those in the know, these talented dudes have seriously high-energy shows that are full of songs ranging from straight go-go to melodic hooky rock songs that keep you singing long after the music stops. They bring it full force every time and have a seriously dedicated core of fans. It’s impossible not to have fun at a VACO show… their vibe is infectious. I’m just hoping Chardy and I get to sit in on one of those sweet jams...
Throughout the ‘90s, PMB shared many a festival bill with both bands, be it at George Mason University’s Mason Day or street festivals in Washington D.C. I am so looking forward to this summer night when our mutual admiration society of musicians can all celebrate each others' catalogs.
